It's wonderful and convenient! But there is no way in hell you'll be able to get Netflix's Daredevil (a Marvel property) at your local library in 15 years. Reddit, especially the /r/movies crowd, is satisfied with Netflix and their endless parade of cheap entertainment. But think how much harder it would be to lose those old films if there were 10 or 100 pirate copies for every 1 real one.
If there was no copyright, many of those old films would never get made, because the profit incentive would be nearly nonexistent. If you really want to get depressed, you consider the great silent directors and stars of the 1890s-1920s, and see how so many old films are completely gone. For every 4 major Hollywood movies that have been released on every format under the sun, there's at least 1 foreign-language, hopelessly obscure, maybe barely-notable film languishing in a vault somewhere. This is a made-up number, but maybe someone has real data.Īnd if you make it "available on any home media format going back to VHS and Betamax", I'd still say 20% of films with that criteria are unavailable online or in a home media format. And unless you have some really good sources, a good number of films (I'd estimate 80% of films over 59 minutes long that were released commercially and still have at least one surviving print or negative) are unavailable on the Internet.
I'm legitimately worried for the future of art if this trend continues. Do it now because there is no guarantee you'll ever be able to see it again. I encourage everyone to pirate any film they can not find legally. This will never be a legal alternative because greed and lawyers gets involved. It obviously isn't a technical limitation because the service does actually exist. I would happily pay for the service I use now if it would make it legal. There is very little that I can't find there.

The place I illegally download movies has everything under the sun. The vast majority of films I watch are not available on any legal platform. It would be devastating to all of humanity to lose that knowledge. This was the biggest digital repository of music the world has ever seen. I can't really begin to explain how much of a loss this is.
